Evolution, Food, and Brain Development

WHEN CONSIDERING YOUR DIET, TAKE AN “EVOLUTIONARY” LOOK BACK AT THE DIET WHICH GREW OUR BRAINS.

Ever since I took my first college chemistry course back in the late 1970’s, I’ve thought of the role our diet has played in human brain development.

The conclusions that I have come to, may be derived from the following sentences:

 Homo sapiens originated in Africa about 200,000 years ago. From then on we have grown to cover the entire globe, at a population of about 6.5 billion (as of 2007).

For about 190,000 years, Homo sapiens followed a hunter-gatherer lifestyle similar to that of Homo neanderthalensis. Their diet consisted of the same wild game, fruits, vegetables and nuts.

I fully realize the doubts that many people have with respect to the nature of “The Theory of Evolution” and that is a personal choice.  I have to state now that a scientific theory is NOT a “theory” as a layman understands the meaning.   The Theory of Evolution is as close to fact as is The Theory of Quantum Mechanics, which has given us our wonderful worldwide Electronic Revolution.  The only doubts that scientists have with evolution, is the “mechanics” of exactly how it occurred, while there is no doubt that it did happen.   That said, lets get back to what is more important, and that is our health and nutrition.

The popular diet today is the “Paleo” diet, of which there seems to be a few variations popularized by books and magazines, and I feel deserves a very serious look by everyone who wants to optimize their health.

The diet in it’s simplest form (think: what did those “hunter-gathers” eat?):

  • Very lean meats – read “wild game” which would include fish and eggs, in my opinion.
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts

I believe that the amazingly balanced diet eaten for 190,000 years, ENABLED and led to the rapid development of human civilization of the last 10,000 years.

Do your brain and whole body a favor and adopt the simple diet that made humans who we are.
